Five of the best… natural sweeteners

Having a sweet tooth does not mean you have to consume large amounts of sugar. But many people don’t want to use artificial sweeteners either.

For those wanting to avoid refined sugar and synthetic sweeteners, here are some good alternatives that are fruit- and plant-based.

Made of apples, grapes and carob, this syrup (above left) has 25 per cent fewer calories than sugar and can even be used in baking.

DATE SYRUP by Crazy Jack Organic £2.99 for 340g

have been used as a sweetener since ancient times.

Pure Via

A thick, dark syrup
(above right) that won’t suit all but has fewer calories than sugar.

PURE VIA by Whole Earth £1.99 for 80g

free of calories, this (right) looks like sugar but is made from the dried
leaves of the stevia plant mixed with sugar alcohol found in fruits.

AGAVE LIGHT SYRUP by Biona Organic £3.19 for 250ml

Made from the agave plant, a relative of the yukka.

Syrup (below left) is runny and not overpowering in flavour.

Includes fructose and glucose and still has a lower calorie count than sugar.

ZSweet £15.99 for 680g

Also has no calories but is made from erythritol – a sugar alcohol (below right). It looks like sugar but won’t trigger a jump in blood-sugar levels, stomach upsets or bloating.
