The 63-year-old singer on how she keeps slim and suffering from depression after the end of her second marriage

ARE YOU MORE HEALTH CONSCIOUS WITH AGE
I’ve always been health conscious but every year I now have a health test, including a laparoscopy where a camera is put into your stomach. My mother died of stomach cancer aged 68, and she would never go to the doctor, so I try not to be like that.
IS IT HARDER TO KEEP SLIM
Yes — I’m thicker now in the waist and I hate it, but I cannot starve myself. I have to have three meals a day. I think the secret is controlling portion size and not eating dinner late — my ideal time is between 6pm and 7pm. If I’m 8 st, it’s my perfect weight (I’m 5 ft 1 in).
DO YOU POP ANY PILLS
Iron, calcium, fish oils and vitamin D. I’ve always kept out of the sun to protect my skin, but now we know the importance of vitamin D, I make sure I get 20 minutes a day.
Pneumonia, about five years ago. I thought it was just a bit of a cough, and toured with it — then when I got back to London, the doctor said I should have been thrown into hospital.
EVER HAD SURGERY
In my late 30s I had surgery on my vocal cords. The newspapers said ‘Lulu never to sing again’, but after that I started working with vocal coaches and learned techniques to protect it.
I love dairy and sugar. When I was in my 50s I was asked to do a commercial about high cholesterol, and I took a test and found I had it! So I stopped the butter and milk, although I’m back on them now, so who knows what will happen.
Are you a smoker 'I was when I was young, because I heard it stopped you putting on weight – which is rubbish,' said Lulu
WHAT EXERCISE DO YOU DO
My favourite thing is a dance class, and I try to do that three to four times a week. Sometimes my knee hurts — I smashed it in a car crash 30 years ago and the wear and tear catches up.
Not that great, but for half-an-hour a day I nap or meditate. I’ve an iPad, an iPhone, an assistant and two grandchildren, so my life’s full. Sometimes, I have to get away from it all.
EVER BEEN DEPRESSED
If you can’t admit to feeling depressed at some time, you’re lying. I’ve never had clinical depression, but when my second marriage (to John Frieda) broke down I thought I was going to die. But I had counselling and, in a way, I was reborn.
Not being able to breathe — something like emphysema freaks me out.
ARE YOU A SMOKER
I was when I was young, because I heard it stopped you putting on weight — which is rubbish. I could smoke, eat, talk and sing at the same time. I gave up for 22 years, then when I heard about my mother’s cancer, I went straight to the tobacconist.
AND DID YOU STOP AGAIN
After three years. I think I was sucking on those death sticks to hold in the grief. My son Jordan said: ‘This is the wrong age to start smoking.’ And I stopped.
