The pop singer, 56, on considering plastic surgery, getting arthritis in his fingers and burning the candle at both ends
'I'm somewhere between 13 and 14st now, although I feel I should be under 13,' said Paul Young
ARE YOU FIT FOR YOUR AGE
I do like a good bike ride and my wife Stacey and I also have a personal trainer twice a week to keep our basic fitness up. But I think I’ve succumbed to the pressure of computers and I spend more time sat down than I used to. It’s unavoidable. And now that three of our four children are older I don’t do as many sports (Levi is 25, Layla’s 17 and Grady’s 16, while Jude is five).
HOW ABOUT YOUR HEALTH
Touch wood, I’ve not had anything too problematic so far. However, I am starting to get arthritis in my fingers. So when I’m playing the guitar, if I move my fingers in an awkward way, I get a really sharp pain. It’s only been in the past three months or so, but I might have to look into getting a cortisone shot in the future. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory.
Sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream — I could dive into a bowl of it any time. It’s hard to resist! I also make a mean Mexican mole sauce using chilli.
WOULD YOU HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY
At this point in my life, I would actually consider it. I think time is beginning to take its revenge on me. I’ve never been obsessive about my looks and I’ve imparted that to my kids as well, but now I’m in my mid-50s I think it’s ok to tweak things.
WATCH YOUR WEIGHT
I’m 6 ft 1 in and somewhere between 13 and 14st now, although I feel I should be under 13. When I was doing lots of live shows I was able to eat what I wanted because it was worked off easily. But now my metabolism must be slowing down. In all fairness, I don’t scrimp on proper ingredients when I’m cooking, so I always use regular butter as opposed to low-fat spreads.

Both my mum and dad are still going strong — they’re 83 and 84. Dad’s like the Six Million Dollar Man — as soon as he feels a twinge, he wants it fixed. He’s even had laser surgery on his eyes. What really annoys me is that I have to put glasses on to read something to him — but he reads it without glasses.
TRIED COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINES
More recently I’ve been getting more twinges doing basic things, like climbing out of my seat in the car or doing DIY. I certainly feel it the next day, but getting acupuncture and osteopathy helps take the edge off.
I burn the candle at both ends and I know I shouldn’t because I’m not quite as good at getting up in the morning, despite having a five-year-old son who likes to wake up early!
I used to have a spider phobia, but I’m pretty fearless now.
LIKE TO LIVE FOR EVER
I’d like to live longer, but not for ever.
