'I took statins for a bit, but I think it reduced my sex drive, so I stopped': Under the microscope with Terry Jones
The Monty Python star, 69, on being obsessed with Jane Austen, never suffering from hangovers and what kept him awake for years
Any vices 'Jane Austen. I don't know what it is about her, but I can't stop re-reading her books,' said Terry Jones
GET YOUR FIVE A DAY
I cook a lot with tomato sauces and love to add avocado to a salad to give it a creamy texture, so I think I do get five a day.
DO YOU EXERCISE MUCH
I walk my dog Nancy, a Jack Russell, on Hampstead Heath for an hour every day. She certainly keeps me on my toes — after a good hour I’m pouring with sweat and need a shower.
ANY FAMILY AILMENTS
My parents had heart attacks — my mum died in her 60s and my father at 74. High cholesterol runs in the family and I was diagnosed when I was 27. A BBC doctor spotted a grey ring around my iris when we were in the pub one day. He said it could be arcus senilis, a ring caused by fat deposits and a sign of high cholesterol.
SO DO YOU TAKE A STATIN
I did for a bit, but I think it reduced my sex drive so I stopped. I take omeprazole for Barrett’s oesophagus, where acid reflux causes the cells in the oesophagus to change.
Jane Austen. I don’t know what it is about her, but I can’t stop re-reading her books. Other than her, it’s beer and wine — I really do love them.

SO WHAT’S YOUR HANGOVER CURE
I never get them — perhaps my liver is used to alcohol after all these years. I did have a liver test once and, to the nurse’s amazement, it was normal.
HAD ANYTHING REMOVED
My gallbladder, about three years ago, after having gallstones for a few years. And part of my bowel was removed after I got cancer in 2006. As soon as I spotted something was wrong — blood after going to the loo — I saw my doctor. Thankfully, they were able to remove the tumour.
Terry no longer takes statins. 'I take omeprazole for Barrett's oesophagus,' he said
EVER GOOGLED AN ILLNESS
In 2004 I was told I needed a hip replacement, as I was getting a bit lame and couldn’t lie on one side. I went on the internet and discovered hip resurfacing, where they resurface the bone rather than replace the whole joint. It has a quicker recovery time. So, I went for that and had the other hip done a couple of years later.
WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT
Sneezing. I suffer from allergies to fur and feathers, and it took me years to realise my feather pillows were the problem. I’ve got rid of them and seem to be fine.
No, but I do avoid red meat — I’m not a big fan of steak and don’t have that many molars left to chew it. I weigh 13st 3lb (and am 5ft 10in).

Claustrophobia. I remember going to the opening of Life Of Brian in Poland and we were taken to a salt mine as part of a tour. I was freaked out.
EVER BEEN DEPRESSED
Only as a child. I loved going to the cinema, but felt down when it was over.
