'Life is too short to not eat what you want': Under the microscope with Alex Polizzi
The 40-year-old presenter on how she conquered depression, insomnia, the ultimate hangover cure and having millions of vices
'I've been smoking on and off since my early 20s,' said Alex Polizzi
DO YOU COME FROM HEALTHY STOCK
I’m fortunate to have a healthy family with no history of genetic diseases. My mother Olga, 65, looks young for her age and everyone seems to think that I’m her sister, which really irritates me. My father, Alessandro, died in a car crash when I was young.
HAVE YOU EVER DIETED
If my jeans feel tight, I might cut down my portions a little bit, but I won’t go as far as dieting. Life is too short to not eat what you want.
Millions. I’ve been smoking on and off since my early 20s; I have a profound love affair with white wine; oh, and I eat fried food and chocolate.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR WORST ILLNESS
Glandular fever when I was 18. I was laid up in bed for days on end, but fortunately my mother was on hand to supply me with an endless amount of tea, which helped relieve my sore throat.
EVER BEEN DEPRESSED
I miscarried in 2010 and felt a bit depressed shortly afterwards. Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a child, but I realised that if I didn’t think positively and accept it had happened, I might have ended up severely depressed.
POP ANY PILLS
I once took a course of calcium and magnesium tablets to help strengthen my bones and a vitamin B complex to boost my metabolism. At the time, I was stressed and they helped to pick me up, but I don’t need them now.

SO ARE YOU PRONE TO STRESS
I’ve had trouble sleeping for as long
as I can remember, particularly when I’m stressed or have a lot of work
on. I average about five hours a night. I get eight if I’ve taken a
sleeping pill, which I do about two nights a week. I’ve been using
acupuncture to help me sleep since I was 18.
HAD ANYTHING REMOVED
My tonsils when I was 14.
DO YOU WORK OUT
I go for a 40-minute jog every morning and am a bit of a pro on the fitness ball.

IS SEX IMPORTANT
It’s absolutely essential to help maintain a healthy and long-lasting relationship because it’s something men and women get an urge for, and someone has to satisfy it, right
I discovered the ultimate hangover cure on holiday in Greece when I was 18. A girlfriend and I had knocked back a whole bottle of tequila between us. I felt awful the next day and she suggested we drink a coffee to help wake us up and orange juice to boost our immune systems. It worked wonders.
